Wide Eyed

Last Week I was having a coffee in the local coffee shop and was fascinated with a group at the next table.  Picture if you will, two young Mums with six children under five, a recipe for trouble you might think.  But no, they were ever so quiet.  The reason – bubbles.  Do you remember those little bottles of solution with a little wand that you dipped in the mixture then blew through the wand and you would get bubbles floating up into the air?  Well, the mums had thoughtfully supplied the children with the bubble kit and they were taking turns.  From time to one of the mums would have a turn and blow a gigantic bubble.  One little sweetie in particular was so fascinated she would watch with eyes wide as saucers as the bubble floated away.

This childlike wonder is something we seem to lose as we age.  Matthew 18:3 tells us to become like children again.

And Jesus called a little child to Him and set him in their midst,
and said, Truly I say to you, Unless you are converted and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of Heaven.
Therefore whoever shall humble himself like this little child, this one is the greater in the kingdom of Heaven.

He was indicating that we are to have that firm trust that children have in their parents, the wonder at the world around them, and be ready to learn.  In other words,  become humble and look at the world with the eyes of an innocent child.  I know that this is a tragic world, but if we like children, look to our father we are not to be anxious, as he has it all in hand.

Back to the group in the coffee shop.  While I was watching this group, I noticed that the place had gone quite quiet and I looked around.  Everyone was watching this group and they were all smiling and nodding to each other.  These innocent children were giving delight to one and all.  You could say that they were a lamp stand. Let us be a lamp stand to those all around us!
